Obituary: William V. Bovitz , a retired Design Engineer, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center on Friday evening, October 7, 2005. He was 88 years old. Mr. Bovitz was born in Chisholm, Minnesota, the son of Yugoslavian immigrants, the late Anton and Josephine Bovitz. He grew up in Chisholm, MN and was a graduate of Chisholm High School. He worked for a number of years with Brakeman Road Freight in Minnesota. He then enlisted in the Army 4 months before the Pearl Harbor Attack. He served in most of WW II and saw action in Tunisia, Sicily, and Naples Foggia. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. During the War he met his future wife Grace Welch and they were married prior to leaving the Army.
Mr. Bovitz began his civilian and married life in Somerville. He then moved to Wilmington, where he has resided for past 56 years. He furthered his education at Portia Law School in Boston and Lowell Tech University. He worked for 25 years for JW Greer Company in Wilmington as a Design Engineer.
He was blessed with the ability to look at a problem and come up with a creative and practical solution. Over the years he designed and developed manufacturing machinery primarily used in large bakery and food processing plants. He was very proud of his work and achievements and frequently took his children on field trips to see his machinery at work. Mr. Bovitz's skills extended beyond machinery design. His family said there wasn't anything he couldn't fix. It might take a little time, but he would get the job done.
He was a member of the VFW in Wilmington. He enjoyed traveling to historic places and visiting family through out the country.
Mr. Bovitz is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Grace J. (Welch) Bovitz of Wilmington.
