Family tradition is that William and a brother Jacob were Huguenots and came to Virginia. Jacob went to the southern part of the country. There are many Pettyjohn families in Alabama and it could be that these descended from Jacob. (but this does not go along with information gathered on the web about the Pettyjohns)
