He inherited the family farm from his father.
Ferdinand became a wealthy farmer and a prominent citizen. He was an agent for the Monitor Iron Company of Big Prairie, Ohio, which produced a self-heating flatiron. He employed fifteen men to sale these and made deliveries with an auto truck.
He was elected Justice of the Peace on the Democratic ticket in 1910.
He and Julie built a stately home on Marx Road and County Line Road. It was considered to be one of the loveliest homes in Posey County. The two story frame home had a turret and stained glass windows. There was a library and parquet hardwood floors in the parlor. A furnace and running water were luxuries at this time. The house and barn were lighted with carbine lights; a phenomena in its time. Ferdinand also had a blacksmith shop and dairy operation. A greenhouse, flower gardens, and a pond with fish were outside.
They rode to church in a horse and surrey and in the winter they used a sleigh.
